History of the Ligonier Tavern

in 1895 Ligonier had became a thriving town, owning its livelihood in part to many Pittsburghers seeking refuge from the hustle and grime of the city. At that time Mr. William j. Potts, Ligonier's first mayor, built for his family a fine Vicorian residence on this site. This was also the first home in town with indoor plumbing.

In 1927, Mr and Mrs James Calderelli , purchased the House from the Potts' youngest child Odie, and refurbished the building to incorporate a restaurant , bar and lodgings for weekend visitors, and was know as the Lincoln Hotel and restaurant and survived numerous renovations through 2 generations..

In 1976 wally and Rita Kriegar along with their 6 children purchased the Italian Landmark. Then in 1982 their oldest daughter Heidi and her husband peter Mckay purchased the Tavern from her family. They added a solarium 2nd and 3rd floor were turned into banquet rooms, They have made several upgrades through the years, and have always created wonderful In house gourmet menus, from house made a destination stop

Fort Ligonier building new program center to accommodate rise in visitors

When middle school students from Ligonier Valley School District visit Fort Ligonier, they learn about algebra and 18th-century military construction by designing and building with Lincoln Logs.
Soon they’ll have to build a bigger fort. Construction will start Friday on the Fort Ligonier Center for History Education, an $8 million project to accommodate a steady increase in visitors since 2011, said Annie Urban, the museum’s executive director. The two-story building, with 9,881 square feet of space, is slated to open next spring. More than 5,200 square feet will be used for educational programs; the second floor is for offices.

What is Grass Fed Beef......

All beef cattle spend the first few months of their lives on pasture or rangeland, where they graze on forage crops such as grass or alfalfa. But then nearly all are fattened, or as the industry likes to call it “finished,” in feedlots where they eat grain.
A lot of people today, horrified by how animals are treated in factory farms and feedlots, and wanting to lower their ecological footprint, are looking for healthier alternatives. As a result, there is a decided trend toward pasture-raised animals.  One former vegetarian, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mark Morford, says he now eats meat, but only “grassfed and organic and sustainable as possible, reverentially and deeply gratefully, and in small amounts.”
Sales of grassfed and organic beef are rising rapidly.  Ten years ago, there were only about 50 grassfed cattle operations left in the U.S.  Now there are thousands.

FOODIES ...what are they

Many people call themselves foodies, and it seems to me that most people who like to eat and appreciate food, identify themselves as a foodie.

A few years ago I might have thought of myself as one, but now I personally don't identify with the term after observing self  proclaimed  foodies in action (which I will describe later).   I am a fanatic about food, the traditions around it, how it is made, eaten, and its history and development.  I am constantly in search of the next thing my mouth will love.  I see this much like the same as a Chef or avid home cook, and that it is less about being a foodie, and more about trying to be informed and feed my interest.

My definition changed because I started noticing people talking about food in a way that was very trendy and not exactly reflective of what I was experiencing (much like that of wine tasting).  Patron's of restaurants began to talk about food pairings like they were in the know, but many times talked out their ass.  IT was more than the comment about a food's MSG content when it did not have one, but it was about preparation or style of certain foods, when it was obviously not the case (sometimes I knew how it was prepared from a Chef).  Food to me is also very subjective, so I think it is funny when people are highbrow or overly judgmental (realizing of course the I am being judgmental when I write a review on yelp).  I guess I associate these two attributes with the term foodie, so when I hear foodie, I think of a person who likes to eat and socialize about food as a means to differentiate themselves from the non foodie, but not necessarily for the sake of knowing about or understanding the food itself.

For the sake of interest and perspective, I thought I would ask yelpers, what is it to be a foodie in you eyes?
